East-West Debt july 2004 news, Emerging Market update : IRAN
IRAN news in short
Europe has criticised Iran’s
“flawed” elections and gave
warning that the conservative
landslide would cast a chill in
relations between Tehran and
the West. EU foreign ministers
made the criticism in a joint
statement. Jack Straw, the British
foreign secretary, noted
that turnout was down by 25 %
from the first free elections in
1997 and that reformist candidates
were “not on offer” in at
least half of the constituencies.
Many Iranians and foreign
diplomats fear that the conservative
victory heralds the end of
seven years of reform. In the
past few years, Iran has fostered
a more friendly relationship to
Europe to counter a more
aggressive stance from the United
States.
