DOMINICAN REPUBLIC news in short

The Dominican Republic, which has some US$ 1,8 billion in private external debt, is teetering on the brink of default after failing to make an interest payment on its debt early this year. The country has since maid US$ 27 million payment but that has not stopped the credit ratings agencies from lowering their ratings just above default. The Dominican Republic’s problems started last year with the collapse of Banco Internacional, its second-largest commercial bank. The banking crisis precipitated a sharp fall in the local currency, the peso, and inflation soared.
